Organization: Part 6: Post-Test
Rather than taking a pre- and post-test for this module,
spend some time mapping out a schedule for literacy instruction.
Make sure that you incorporate all of the essential components of
teaching children to read and write. Consider how to organize this
so that children are always occupied with meaningful tasks and do
not have down time that could lead to classroom management problems.
You will want to block out at least 2 ½ hours for literacy,
even if you do not have a straight block of time without interruptions
for special classes (gym, music, art). My principal once said to
me, “First grade is 80% reading.” What he was saying
was that any activity in the primary grades can have a reading or
writing component. This is what content area literacy is all about.
While content area literacy is not included in this website, it
is important to also include it in your planning of your daily schedule
and your teaching activities.
